Letrozole for PCOS Fertility Treatment?
Some of my PCOS women have searched the internet recently and have come to ask me about the “Ovulation Induction” drug called Letrozole, (also known as Femara).
This tablet is an Aromatase inhibitor and has similar actions to the tablet Clomiphene Citrate in stimulating follicle and egg growth. Consequently fertility doctors around the world questioned whether it could be a fertility treatment for PCOS.
It was first proposed as an ovulation inducing drug for PCOS women back in 2001.
There have been some small studies on PCOS women using this tablet and the ovulation rate and pregnancy rate are very similar to the Clomiphene Citrate fertility treatment.
However at the present… Letrozole/Femara is only indicated for First-line treatment of post-menopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is not registered for fertility treatment.
If you would like to know more about this I suggest you speak to your fertility specialist.
