Alicia’s PCOS Story: Getting pregnant with Clomid
I initially meet Alicia 3 years ago when her menstrual cycle did not return after stopping the contraceptive pill to get pregnant.
Back then I made the diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – PCOS, and she went on and conceived using the ovulation treatment called Clomid ( see clomid treatment in the fertility treatment section)
By the way, this scenario is a common finding in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and indicates no ovulation, or infrequent ovulation and is a common cause of what we call anovulatory infertility.
Alicia delivered a beautiful baby boy 14 months ago and has now represented to me the other day for a 2nd baby.
Since the delivery she has had no menstrual cycle/periods indicating no ovulation is occurring. She is a very slim PCOS woman with a body mass index (BMI ) of 19 and has no other PCOS signs of increased male hormones such as acne and increased facial and body hair.
This picture is very different from the classic picture of PCOS where many women are overweight and by losing weight many would start ovulating and conceiving spontaneously.
For Alicia though, losing weight has been proven to have little benefit for her. So the aim for fertility treatment is to help her get pregnant with the cheapest and easiest treatment first and this is called Clomid or Clomiphene Citrate tablets. She has just started this and I will be monitoring her cycles for ovulation and looking at the best time to try for a baby.
